Bowling Centre Operating Models

Five ways to run a bowling centre — independent operation, franchising, partnership, affiliation and membership — and the four areas every model still has to m…

A bowling centre can be run under several different ownership and revenue arrangements. Each model changes who carries the capital, who carries the risk, and how the venue earns beyond lane rental. Operating models Independent operation: the company or individual owns and runs the venue, funding the equipment, space and staff, and carrying the full operating risk and responsibility. Franchising: the brand owner licenses its brand and operating model to another operator. The franchisee pays a royalty or a share of revenue, and in return gains brand recognition and operating support. Partnership operation: the centre cooperates with related businesses — a bar, restaurant or other entertainment operator — to run the venue and share the profit, which widens the revenue mix inside the same floor area. Affiliation: the brand owner allows another operator to use its brand and model without the full support a franchise agreement brings. The affiliate buys its own equipment, leases its own space and pays an affiliation fee. Membership: the centre runs a membership scheme with benefits such as discounted games and priority booking, which raises repeat visits and loyalty. What every model still has to manage Equipment maintenance and renewal: lanes, pinsetters and scoring need scheduled servicing, and equipment has to be replaced as it ages. Marketing: the centre has to keep reaching new customers through online and offline promotion, competitions and events. Service quality: staff attitude, comfort and pricing are what bring customers back, whichever model funds the venue. Cost control and profitability: rent, payroll and maintenance have to be held against revenue so the venue stays viable over the long term. The day to day version of this is covered in bowling centre operation plan; the capital side is in bowling centre investment plan. Ask SPORTS ANT to review a site before choosing a model.
